Cuban Minister of Labor and Social Security Martha Elena Feito-Kabrera was forced to resign from her post after commenting in a parliamentary session that denied the existence of beggars on the Communist Island.

The minister had said that there was no such thing as “beggars” in Cuba and the people passing through the garbage, they essentially do this optional to make “easy money” as she said.

Her comments were widely criticized by the Cubans at home and abroad and sparked the answer to the President of the island Miguel Diaz-Canel. She resigned shortly after.

The poverty levels and the lack of food have deteriorated in Cuba as it continues to fight a severe economic crisis.

Faito-Kabrera made the comments earlier this week at a session of the National Assembly, in which she talks about people who beg and dig through Kobini in Cuba.

It seems that she denies their existence, saying, “There are no beggars in Cuba. There are people who pretend to be beggars to make easy money.”

She also accuses people looking for the garbage of being “illegal participants in the recycling service”.

The minister obviously assessed the outrage and anger that her comments would also cause the extent to which they represented the country’s leadership as insensitive, authoritatively and deeply excluded from the heavy economic struggles of ordinary Cubans.

A number of Cuban activists and intellectuals have published a letter calling for its removal, saying that the comments are “insult to the Cuban people.”

The Cuban president then criticizes the fito, the carethon of the parliamentary session – though without mentioning it by name – saying that management cannot “act with leniency” or be “excluded from the realities” of people.

Cuban economist Pedro Montreal published on X, saying that there are “people hidden as ministers” in Cuba.

The resignation of Fito-Cabrera was accepted by the Cuban Communist Party and the government.

Until the Cuban government publishes official data on the number of people who beg, the increase in their number is obvious to most Cubans against the background of the deep economic crisis on the island.
