EPAOn Thursday, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump has a medical condition in his veins called chronic venous insufficiency.
During a regular briefing for news, the press secretary Carolyn Levitus revealed that the 79-year-old Trump had noticed a swelling in his feet, which prompted an examination with his doctor who had diagnosed his condition.
Trump was also recently shot with makeup spots on the back of his hand. The White House said it was not related to the condition of the veins, but instead was bruised as a result of frequent handshake.
Here are some of the main things you need to know about the diagnosis of the US president.
Trump’s condition is “benign and frequent”, especially in persons over the age of 70, according to a note from a White House doctor, Captain Sean Barbabella, released to reporters.
Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when the veins of the legs do not allow the blood to return to the heart, leading to a pool in the lower limbs.
Normal blood flow from the legs back to the heart moves against gravity, which in older people can become a difficult process.
This may be due to the weakening valves in the veins, something that may appear with advancing age.
ReutersWhen blood pools in the legs due to chronic venous insufficiency, this can cause swelling as the type seen in Trump’s ankles in the latest photos.
“It may be related to serious conditions, but it is not a serious condition in itself and what is very common,” said Dr. Matthew Edwards, chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery at Wake Forest University, before the BBC.
“People of his age (group), I would probably say somewhere between 10 and 35% of people would have that.”
Experts say other risks include being overweight, having a history of blood clots and having a job that require patients to be on their feet for a long duration.
After noticing swelling in his feet, President Trump was appreciated by the White House medical unit, “an abundance of caution,” said a statement by Trump doctor Sean Barbabella.
Dr. Barbabella wrote that President Trump has undergone a “overall exam” that revealed chronic venous insufficiency, which he believes is “benign and general condition”.
“The important thing is that there is no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease,” he added.
The tests also showed “normal heart structure and function,” said Dr. Barbabella, adding: “No signs of heart failure, renal impairment or systemic disease were identified.”
Dr. Barbabella also scored bruises on the back of Trump’s hand, which was spotted in the latest photos, sometimes covered by makeup.
“This is in accordance with the slight irritation of the soft tissues of the frequent handshake and the use of aspirin, which is taken as part of the standard cardiovascular prophylaxis regimen,” he said.
The note ended, saying that President Trump “remains in excellent health.”
ReutersThe US -based vascular surgery society has said that the condition can cause severity in the affected limb, as well as swelling and pain.
In some cases, chronic venous insufficiency can also cause painful cramps, cramps and leg ulcers.
Wearing custom -made socks for medical compression socks can help manage the condition, and experts also recommend that patients raise their feet at night and use a lotion.
In April, Trump suffered his first annual physically from his second presidential term.
“President Trump remains in excellent health, manifesting a healthy heart, pulmonary, neurological and general physical function,” ” Dr. Barbabella said in a note at that time.
This health assessment revealed that the president is taking several medicines to control his cholesterol – rosuvastatin and Ezetimib, as well as aspirin for cardiac prevention and Momethasone skin cream.
The US president has regularly advertised his good health and once described himself as “the most healthy president who has ever lived.”
After his first annual physical, Trump told reporters that “I generally felt that I was in very good shape” and added that he thought he had “a good heart, a good soul, a very good soul.”
