The human remains found near an archaeological site in the Guatemalan jungle are considered to be those of American birds for birds, which has been reported to have disappeared almost two and a half years ago, local officials say.
Lilac shirts, sandals and shorts, which corresponds to those worn by Raymond Vincent Ashcroft on the day of his disappearance, were found in the same place where human bones were discovered, Carlos Sosa reported.
The 66 -year -old Ashcroft was part of a bird monitoring group visiting the ancient city of Maya Tikal, the object of UNESCO World Heritage Site, in February 2023.
During his disappearance, his wife told him that he had decided to return to the hotel, but never arrived.
She stayed with the group, taking pictures and announced that he had disappeared as soon as he realized that he had not arrived in their hotel room in the Tikal National Park, local media reported at the time.
The search countries were quickly sent – only half an hour after Ashcroft split from his group – but did not find a trace of the missing tourist.
Sniffer’s dogs were brought to look for the dense vegetation of the national park, but to no avail.
Weeks after his disappearance, Interpol issued a yellow notice, but no observation reports were made and no trace of his belongings were found until this week.
Human bones and clothing, combining those worn by Ashroft, were spotted in the jungle 14 km from the archeological site by residents of a nearby village, said a local radio station.
According to an employee of the Guatemalan prosecutor of the Prosecutor General for crimes against foreign tourists, the remains lie in dense vegetation and can only be reached on foot.
He added that the DNA test would determine if the remains were Ashkfl.
Tourists disappeared before and then in the vast national park.
In 2022, a 53-year-old German man separated from his group and died of a heat stroke.
And in 2023, a French family was found dehydrated, but safely after being lost in two days.
