ReutersMore than one -third of MPs have signed a letter to Sir Kyar Starmer calling on the United Kingdom to recognize the Palestinian state.
About 220 MPs from nine political parties have supported the call – More than half of them work – arguing that the United Kingdom’s recognition will send a “powerful” message and a vital step towards a bilateral decision.
The letter accumulates pressure on the Prime Minister after France is committed to recognizing Palestinian statehood within months.
In a statement after an emergency telephone call with French President Emmanuel Macron and Germany Friedrich Merz, Sir Keyer said this move would have to be part of a “wider plan that ultimately leads to a decision by two countries”.
In his statement, Sir Keyer said: “Along with our closest allies, I work on the way to peace in the region, focused on practical decisions that will make a real change in the lives of those who suffer in this war.
“This time it will expose the specific steps needed to turn the truce, so desperately needed, into lasting peace.
“Recognizing a Palestinian state should be one of these steps. I am unequivocally in this regard.
“But it must be part of a broader plan, which ultimately leads to the decision of two countries and lasting security for Palestinians and Israelis.”
A joint statement from the leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany after their call did not mention Palestinian statehood.
But she said that all three countries “are ready to take additional action to support the immediate cessation of fire and a political process that leads to lasting security and peace for the Israelis, the Palestinians and the entire region.”
The statement is critical of the Israeli government, requiring cessation of supporting the restrictions and a warning to the “humanitarian disaster that we are witnessing in Gaza must end now.”
The statement also emphasizes that Hamas must be disarmed and “has no role in the future of gas.”
The letter comes after the United Kingdom and 27 other countries have condemned the “nutrition of the help of help and inherently killing civilians” seeking food and water in gas.
Israel, who controls the entry of all supplies to the Palestinian territory, has repeatedly said that there is no siege and blames Hamas for malnutrition.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry rejected the statement of the countries, saying it was “excluded from reality and sending the wrong message to Hamas.”
According to the UN Human Rights Service, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli military as they have been trying to receive nutritional assistance in the last two months.
Israel said his troops only fired warning shots and that they did not deliberately fire civilians.
The letter was signed by 131 Labor MPs, including senior figures such as former Minister Liam Birne and Commission Chairman Ruth Cadbury.
LIB DEM leader Sir Ed Davey, former Tori Kit Minister Malthouse and conservative Sir Edward Lee – the longest -time employee of parliament – have also signed.
SNP, Greens, Plaid Cymru, SDLP and the independent were among those who signed the letter.
The letter alleges that parliament has been conducting an inter -party consensus for decades to recognize the Palestinian statehood as part of a “two -state decision”.
While the confession itself will not put an end to Gaza suffering, “British recognition of Palestine would be particularly powerful” given its history in the region, MPs say.
Labor MP Sarah Champion, who chairs the Committee for the Selection of International Development and who organizes the letter, said the bilateral decision “remains the only viable proposal to secure a lasting peace for the region.”
“The recognition would send a powerful symbolic message that we support the rights of the Palestinian people, that they are not alone and they must maintain hope that there is a route that leads to lasting peace and security for both Israeli and Palestinian people,” she added.
Last month, about 60 MPs signed a letter to Foreign Secretary David Lamie, and a proposal in parliament was signed by 110 MPs.
In 2014, the House of Municipalities accepted an uninterrupted proposal calling on the government to recognize a Palestinian state with Israel, which was supported by a huge majority of MPs.
Most countries – about 139 in total – officially recognize a Palestinian state, although many European nations and the United States say they will only do it as part of the long -term conflict resolution.
Spain, Ireland and Norway officially You took the step last yearHoping to exert diplomatic pressure to secure the fire in the gas.
In the United Nations organization (UN), Palestinian representatives have limited rights to participate in the activities of the UN, and the territory is also recognized by various international organizations, including the Arab League.
Skeptics claim that recognition would largely be a symbolic gesture, unless questions about the guidance and the degree of the Palestinian state are first addressed.
