Human dignity should be protected from the rise of AI, says the Pope

Pope Leo XIV told the Vatican’s first liturgy about Catholic social media influencing that human dignity must be protected online as the world is facing the “challenge” of artificial intelligence (AI).

“Nothing that does not come from man and his creativity should not be used to undermine the dignity of others,” says the Pope in the basilica of St. Peter.

He said that developing technology should be used for the “benefit of all humanity” during comments on the anniversary of the Vatican Youth, a one -week gathering for young worshipers, which takes place every 25 years.

This is the most in a series of interventions that the Pope has made on the topic of AI since he was elected in May.

During Tuesday’s speech, the Pope urged the world to protect “our ability to listen and talk” in “New Age”.

“We have an obligation to work together to develop a way of thinking, to develop a language, of our time, which gives a voice to love,” the Pope said.

He also called on the social media influenants to seek “those who suffer and need to know the Lord” by their content.

“Be agents of communion capable of destroying the logic of division and polarization, of individualism and self -centeredness,” he added.

During his first Sunday address in May, Pope Leo XIV suggested that the development of AI and other advances means that the church is necessary for the defense of human dignity and justice.

Pope Leo XIV, who studied mathematics at the University of Philadelphia in Vilanova in 1977, was the first Pontiff from the United States.

Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, Leo served as an altar boy and was ordained in 1982.

Although he moved to Peru three years later, he regularly returns to the United States to serve as a priest before in his hometown.

He has Peruvian nationality and is remembered with courtesy as a figure who works with marginalized communities and helps to build bridges.
