The German Olympic Sports Confederation said Dalmeier was “more than the Olympic champion – she was a man with heart, attitude and vision.”
The president of the International Olympic Committee Kirsti Coventry said Dalmeier’s death was “deeply shocking to all of us in the Olympic Movement.”
She added: “She lost her life in her favorite mountains. She will be remembered forever.”
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Dalmeier is “an ambassador of our country around the world and an example of imitation of peaceful, joyful and honest coexistence across borders.”
Dalmayer, an experienced climber, represented Germany at two Winter Olympics, winning two gold and one bronze medal in Pchenshan in 2018.
She was the first woman to win the sprint and the pursuit of events in the same matches and won another 15 medals, including seven gold, in five world championships, before retiring from the May 2019 race.
