US President Donald Trump says he has ordered two nuclear submarines to “be positioned in the respective regions” in response to “highly provocative” comments by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Trump said he acted “only if these stupid and inflammatory statements are more than that. Words are very important and can often lead to unforeseen consequences, I hope this is not one of these cases.”

He did not say where the two submarines were located, in accordance with the US military protocol.

Recently, Medvedev threatened the United States in response to Trump’s ultimatums in Moscow to agree to end the fire in Ukraine or to face difficult sanctions.

Russia and the United States own the most core weapons in the world and both countries have a nuclear submarine fleet.

In Friday’s publication on Truth Social Trump wrote: “Based on the highly provocative statements of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of the Russian Federation Council, I ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the respective regions.”

The US President did not say whether he was referring to nuclear or nuclear armed submarines in his Truth Social post.

Trump and Medvedev recently participated in a series of personal attacks against each other on social media.

This comes after Trump set a new deadline for Putin to end the war by August 8 – which Putin showed no signs of doing.

Previously, on Monday, Trump had set the deadline for “10 or 12”. Earlier in July, he threatened Russia with heavy tariffs aimed at his oil and other exports if Putin did not end the war for 50 days.

Dmitry Medvedev was president of Russia in 2008-12.

Medvedev – who was the president of Russia from 2008 to 2012 – accused Trump of playing “ultimatum game with Russia” earlier this week.

In a publication by X Medvedev said that “every new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war.”

He also described Trump’s ultimatum as a “theatrical” earlier in July, saying that “Russia is not interested.”

Writing on Telegram on Thursday, Medvedev warned of a threat from “dead hand” – which some military analysts have learned as a reference to the code name of the Reduction Broadse Control System of Russia.

Friday was not the first time Trump responded to Medvedev’s comments. On Thursday, he described Medvedev as “a failed former president of Russia, who believes he is still president.”

Trump also warned Medvedev to “look at his words”, adding that “He is entering a very dangerous territory!”

Medvedev supports Russia’s full -scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in 2022 and is an outspoken critic of the West.
