This Detroit startup is turning to utilities to make home efficiency upgrades cheaper

Ask any homeowner: Reform projects are not fun at all. To determine a fair price, starting from the search for a contractor, the process spreads uncertain.

Solar panels have popped up a lot of startups to help home owners to deal with the electrification projects, including installed and replacing gas furnaces with heat pumps. However, they still fight the expense questions: Customers are often wated more than half of the war.

Pearl Edison thinks the answer is utilities.

“As much as we are gaining the equity and confidence of their brand,” Ivan Anderson, co-founder and CEO Pearl EdisonTell TechCrunch.

Investors bought this idea. The Detroit-based startup has raised $ 3.3 million seeds from the new system Venture and Commonwell Venture, the company exclusively informed TechCrunch. Lightbank and Newlab participated.

Perl Edison works with utilities to identify customers who can most benefit from thermal retrofit projects, including heat pumps and additional insulation. It creates a white label website for utility and it helps to promote people to sign up to the larger company to sign up for power efficiency upgrades.

The company uses various data sources to design a job and generate a price, which gives it guarantee for the customer. After its software has made the first draft of the plan, it sends workers to verify everything in the field before finalizing the design.

It then sends the tasks to the contractors who are tested, who complete the installation. Pearl Edison itself makes money on installs, assumes that most of this job will cost less than quotes. Anderson said homeowners should also save money, because Pearl Edison can deal for low prices as installers do not have to waste time acquiring customers.

In the meantime, the company has two utility, DT Energy in Michigan and Dukson lights in the Pittsburgh region and a government, a government, Ann Arber city in Michigan. Anderson says the company will add two more utility this year.

“We got them as a good partner,” said Anderson.
