A court in southern India has sentenced a prominent politician in the State of Life Prison after being found guilty of raping one of his domestic officials.
The condemnation of Prajal Rean, who is an influential political family in the state, took place on Saturday – a day after he was convicted of sexual assault on his former employee.
The allegations against the 34-year-old former MP from India first came to light in 2023 after hundreds of explicit videos with his participation began circulating on social media, causing outrage throughout the country.
Revan denied the allegations. On Friday, he fell apart and pleaded for less punishment when he was found guilty.
He may appeal the sentence.
Revan is the grandson of former Indian prime minister, HD Dev Gouda, whose party Janna Dahl (secular) is an ally with the BJP of current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It is rare for a person of such influential political origin to be punished in such a case in India.
Revan left India In April 2024, using his diplomatic passport after hundreds of videos of suspected abuse began to circulate in his country.
At the time, the Revan did not comment on the videos, but an office officer told him that the videos had been proven.
He was arrested a month later after returning home from Germany.
He is still facing two other cases of rape and one case of sexual harassment. He denies the allegations.
