A meteorite, which has broken into a home in the United States, is older than planet Earth, scientists said.
The site flew through the sky in daylight before exploding through Georgia on June 26, NASA confirmed.
Researchers at the University of Georgia examined a fragment of the rock that pierced the roof of a home in the city of McDonaf.
They have found that on the basis of the type of meteorite, it is expected to have formed 4,56 billion years ago, making it approximately 20 million years older than Earth.
Residents in Georgia and the nearby states have reported hundreds of observations and a strong boom noise when the fiery ball breaks through the sky.
The rock was rapidly diminishing in size and speed, but still travels at least 1 km per second, passing through a man’s roof in Henry County.
Numerous fragments that hit the building were handed over to scientists who analyzed their origin.
“This particular meteor, which entered the atmosphere, has a long history before reaching the foundation of McDonaf,” says Scott Harris, a geologist at Georgia.
Using an optical and electronic microscopy, Harris and his team have determined that the rock is chondrit – the most insofar type of stony meteorite, According to NASA – Which meant he was approximately 4.56 billion years old.
The home resident said she still found pieces of space dust around her home from the impact.
The object, called McDonough Meteorite, is the 27th, which is restored by Georgia.
“This is something that was expected once a few decades, not many times within 20 years,” Harris said.
“Modern technologies, in addition to a careful audience, will help us restore more and more meteorites.”
Harris hopes to publish his discoveries about the composition and speed of the asteroid, which will help to understand the threat of more asteroids.
“One day there will be the opportunity and we never know when it will be so that something big can hit and create a catastrophic situation. If we can prevent it, we want,” he said.
