The Italian landmark Mattia Debertolis died after collapsed last week during the world games in China.
The 29-year-old was found unconscious by the organizers during an orientation event last Friday in Chendu.
The Italian died on Tuesday – four days after his collapse.
“Although he received immediate expert medical care at one of the leading medical institutions in China, he died,” organizers of the world games said in a statement.
At this stage, the cause of Debertolis’s death is unknown.
The world games are a very sporting event held every four years for events not listed in the Olympics.
Debtolis participates in the final of the men’s average event event, which took place at temperatures above 30 degrees when it collapsed.
The Italian was one of the 12 athletes listed as “did not finish” in official results.
He was part of the Italian national team and finished 5th in the World Cup final in 2022.
The organizers of the world games have said they will “continue to support the Debertolis family and the Orienteering community in every way possible.”
