DC crime: What do the numbers say and how safe do people feel?

National Guard troops began appearing on the streets of Washington, a day after President Donald Trump deployed troops in the city and took control of his police as he claims that the crime of violence was out of control.

Armored vehicles were spotted in city centers and tourist sites around the US capital on Tuesday night.

Officials said 800 National Guard troops are expected to be deployed, as well as 500 federal law enforcement agents.

Washington Mayor, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat who denied crime to be out of control in her city, defined the deployment of the army as an “authoritarian impetus”.

Trump, a Republican, also threatened such deployments against New York and Chicago, two other Democrats controlled cities.

Camoufired troops are embarking on the US capital following Trump’s message on Monday.

They were seen to erect barricades outside several government buildings and take pictures with tourists.

Twenty -three people were arrested by federal agents on Monday night, according to White House press secretary Carolyn Levit. Agents support local law enforcement authorities.

She said the arrests were for murder, weapons crimes, drug deals, ridiculous acts, lurking, reckless driving and other crimes.

“This is just the beginning,” Levitt said.

“In the next month, the Trump administration will mercilessly pursue and arrest any violent criminal in the area who violates the law, undermines public safety and threatens the law obeying Americans.”

Later, FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI agents had participated in about half of these arrests.

Both Washington Mayor and the head of police in the city said earlier on the day when they share the same goal as federal agents.

“What I am focused on is the federal jump and how to make the most of the federal officers we have,” Bouser said after a meeting with US Prosecutor Pam Bondy.

The head of the Sofia Police Department, Pamela Smith, said: “We know we need to remove illegal weapons from our streets and if we have this influx of increased presence, we know that this will make our city even better.”

But in the mayoralty on Tuesday night, the mayor sharpened his criticism of Trump.

Bowser urged community members to “protect our city, to protect our autonomy, to protect their home rule and to reach the other side of that person, and to make sure we choose a democratic house so that we have a rear stop for this authoritarian impetus,” according to the New York Times.

He came when he was launched as an armed striker who killed a man on Monday night in Logan Circle, one of the most modern Washington neighborhoods, only a White House mile.

It was the 100th murder recorded in Washington this year, according to local media.

Police claim that the suspect was last seen wearing a black shirt and wearing a rifle.

The shooting prompted the US secret service to strengthen security outside the president’s home as a precaution.

According to crime reports published by the City Police of Washington, violent crimes reached the biggest crime in 2023 and fell 35% last year to their lowest level for three decades.

But DC Police Union chairman Greg Pemberton challenged this data, having previously accused the city police department of “deliberately falsifying crime data, creating a false narrative of reduced crime while communities suffer.”

FBI data also showed a decline in crime in Washington last year – a more digestive reduction by 9%.

Studies suggest that the percentage of the capital’s killings is higher than the average compared to other major cities in the United States.
