For decades, NASA flew its own relay orbit and spacecraft to ferry valuable data back to Earth. Now, the agency is transferring to the purchase of connection as a service, it is a lot like launch and innovator transport.
This pivot has given birth to a race, big competitors are pitching ways to keep Mars missions online. What is at risk is not a single deal: This is the data pipe on Mars.
This new approach, which will mix NASA resources and commercial infrastructure, will gradually replace the patchwork relay network depending on the agency. Generally, it works by orbiters like orbiter and Maevan from Rovers and Landers to reconsider orbiter and send it to the Deep Space Network (DSN) giant antenna on earth.
The NASA relay spacecraft is still healthy, but they have never been referred to as permanent spine. The latest veteran review of the agency Planetary brings a critical role as Moven’s relay to missions and provides steps to keep available in the early 2030s. However, in the end, this hardware will be eroded.
At the same time, the NASA Space Communications and Navigation Program that operates DSN is looking for a solution to growing these aging resources. According to the RFP published in July, the goal is to create an inter-useful marketplace where NASA may be one of the many customers instead of the owner-operator.
The current request is not to buy instant hardware, especially for the study of competence. The inquiry is doubled: a “lunar trunkline” between the moon and the earth, and the communications from the end to the end, which removes data from surface resources, orbit of Mars, and the earth’s operation center.
This is a great challenge. Any architecture must fight the earth and the moon and well-being, long delays, periodic solar intervention and the visibility of the earth and the vast distance between high requirements for fault-tolerant systems. That is why NASA is asking plans, asking how the industry can solve these puzzles immediately to solve these puzzles instead of jumping towards the collection.

Although TechCrunch cannot confirm which companies are submitting the concept proposes, a handful of them have already furnished their place.
Blue source Open In order to support NASA missions on Mars on Mars along with 2028, it is a Mars’ telecommunication orbit, built on the Blue Ring platform, which is created as clever, high-performed spacecraft. Which organization says Mars is a key element of its proposed architecture for promoting a sample return.
In 2024, NASA Mars Search Program Individually financed the study of 12 short commercial servicesSpaceX, Lockheed Martin and Blue Origin, including a trio of study for the next genera relay services. The proposal to “adapt to the Earth-Co-Co-Co-Co-Co-Co-Poor Satellite for Mars” will probably be obtained from its Starlink Internet Satellite Star.
The long-term goal is to convert the agency’s planet’s search agenda to a permanent conversion of human presence from the pure-science mission to the moon and finally convert it to Mars.
