Myanmar will launch his general election on December 28, his military government announced in a gradual poll, widely convicted as a shame that will be used to strengthen the junta power.
This will be the first vote as the junta took power in a bloody coup in 2021 and closed a democratically elected leader Aun San Sung Key.
Myanmar is involved in a civil war because with deadly battles between the military and ethnic armed groups, many of which have said they will not allow vote in their areas.
Previous election plans have been many times delayed as the military fought to contain an opposition uprising that gained control over much of the country.
About 55 parties have registered for the ballot boxes, state media said on Monday, adding that nine of them are planning to compete for places across the country.
“The first phase of the multi -party democratic general elections for each parliament will begin on Sunday, December 28, 2025,” said a statement by Myanmar’s election committee.
“The dates for the next phases will be announced later.”
With large parts of Myanmar under the control of the opposition and in a state of war, conducting these elections is a huge logistical exercise for the country’s military rulers.
But Junta’s leader Min Aun Cobeng, who led the catastrophic coup four and a half years ago, said the vote should continue and threaten a severe punishment for anyone who criticizes or impeded the election.
The National Democracy League led by Su Key, which won landslides in the two elections before the coup, will not be allowed to compete for this one.
The planned elections are widely rejected, but there is support of Myanmar’s most powerful neighboring China, which views stability in southeastern Asian nation as vital strategic interestS
Critics believe the junta will use polls to maintain its power through power of attorney political parties.
Tom Andrews, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nation on the Myanmar Rights Situation, accused the junta of designing Mirage of Election Exercise in June to give themselves legitimacy.
Andrews called on the international community to reject the election in order to “prevent the military junta from … to escape with this fraud.”
Thousands of people were killed in Myanmar after the coup that destroyed the economy in much of the country and left a humanitarian vacuum.
Myanmar was also hit by a A devastating earthquake in March And international funding cuts that have left vulnerable people in desperate and dangerous difficulties.
Junta would be “deluded” To think that elections conducted in the present circumstances will be considered “remote reliable”, Human Rights Watch told the BBC earlier this year.
“As an election predecessor, they must end the violence, release all these arbitrarily detained, and allow all political parties to register and participate instead of dissolving opposition parties,” NGO said.
