India and China should be seen as “partners”, not “opponents or threats,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang YI said on Monday when he arrived for a two -day visit to Delhi.
Yi met with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar – only the second such meeting between the two countries since 2020 – when Deadly clashes In the Valley of Galvan in Ladakh, a controversial border region of Himalay, led to a complete breakdown of connections between the parties.
Relations are now in a “positive trend” towards cooperation, Yi said before meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
Jaishankar said India and China are striving to “move on from a difficult period in our relationships.”
The two colleagues have discussed a number of bilateral issues from trade to worship and sharing river data.
Yi also met with the National Security Advisor in India Ajit Doval on Tuesday for continuing negotiations to resolve the border dispute between the two countries.
“We are happy to share that stability has already been restored to the boundaries,” II said during the meeting at the level of Doval.
“The failures we have encountered over the last few years have not been in our interest,” he said.
A visit to Yi is seen as the latest sign of defrosting in nuclear armed neighbors.
India and China agreed to patrol arrangements to de -escalate the tension along the disputed border of Himalay last October.
Since then, the two countries have been taking a number of steps to normalize relations, including China, allowing Indian worshipers to visit key places in Tibet’s autonomous region this year. India also restarted visa services to Chinese tourists and agreed to resume conversations to open border trade through certain gaps.
There are also reports that direct flights between the two countries will resume this year.
Yi meetings are expected to lay the foundations for the first visit of Modi in China for seven years later this month to attend the Shanhai Cooperation Organization Summit (SCO), a regional security block.
Reports suggest that Modi may also have bilateral conversations with China President Xi Jinping, but none of the countries has confirmed it.
The filming between the countries comes against the backdrop of the worsening bilateral relations of India with the United States.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump imposed An additional 25% punishment On Indian imports for the purchase of oil and weapons from Russia, with total tariffs up to 50% – the highest in Asia.
On Monday, the White House trading adviser Peter Navarro wrote an opinion in the Financial Times, accusing India of “coziness of both Russia and China.”
“India acts as a global clearing house for Russian oil, turning an embargo raw material into exports of high value, while giving Moscow the dollars it needs,” Navarro wrote.
“If India wants to be treated as a strategic partner of the United States, it must start acting as such,” he said.
In his remarks after a meeting with YI on Monday, Jaishankar said conversations would include global developments.
“We are looking for a fair, balanced and multipolar world order, including multipolar Asia,” Jaishancar said.
“The reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day. In the present environment, there is clearly an imperative and strengthening of stability in the world economy,” he added.
