Walmart recalled some of its shrimp products in the United States after radioactive material was found in a shipment of seafood.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public not to eat frozen shrimp sold under the Walmart Great Value label can be exposed to a dangerous isotope in shipping containers.
A sample of breaded shrimp tested positively for the substance, said FDA, but this positive sample “did not enter the US trade”.
Consumers in 13 US countries that shrimp products are sold are recommended to throw recently bought products among Three batchesS
“The health and safety of our customers is always a major priority,” a Walmart spokesman told the BBC. “We have issued a sales limit and removed this product from our affected stores. We work with the supplier to explore.”
The spokesman added that users who have purchased the downloaded products can visit any Walmart place for full recovery.
The responded shrimp were sold at Walmart’s places in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia, and buyers in these states were conscientious.
It comes from an Indonesian supplier who has since had a number of delivery containers refused to enter the United States, FDA said.
One shipment has been positively tested for cesium-137, the radioactive form of the periodic element of cesium.
The amount contained in the tested shipment posted by the FDA was not sufficient to cause acute damage to consumers, time exposure may be an increased risk of cancer by damage to living cells in the body, agency officials said.
Cesium-137 is made by nuclear reactions and is present in traces in the soil, food and air worldwide. It is one of the main sources of radiation around Chernobyl in Ukraine and Fukushima in Japan.
The FDA said no cesium-137 was found in other products, but warned that it did not rule out pollution.
