Seven migrants deported from the United States have arrived in Rwanda, with the first of 250 expected to be taken from the African country on a deal reached by President Donald Trump’s administration.
“The first group of seven checked migrants arrived in Rwanda in mid -August,” said Rwanda Government spokesman Yolande Macolo.
She did not give details of their nationalities, explaining only that four of them would remain in Rwanda, with three choosing to return to their home countries.
Right groups have warned that such deportations can violate international law if people are sent to countries where torture or other abuses are risk.
Trump focused on an extensive mass deportation scheme to remove undocumented migrants from the United States after starting his second term in January.
So far, at least a dozen countries have agreed to accept deported migrants from other countries.
“Regardless of their specific needs, all these persons will receive appropriate support and protection from the Rwanda government,” Mrs. Macolo told Rwanda New Times NewsS
The deportes were accommodated by an International Organization and will be visited by the International Migration Organization (IOM) and social services in Rwanda, she added.
A spokesman at the MOM confirmed to the new AFP agency that he saw the migrants “appreciate their basic needs” without giving further details.
Earlier this month, Macolo told the BBC that Rwanda was moving forward with the deal, as “almost every family in Rwanda has experienced the difficulties of displacement.”
Rwanda went through genocide in the mid -1990s – and the government wants to expand the help of other migrants, maintaining that it can provide a safe place for them, despite criticism of its human rights.
