The Prime Minister of Thailand has been removed from the Constitutional Court by immersing the country’s policy in turmoil and a blow to its most powerful political dynasty.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra was rejected for a violation of ethics in a leaking phone for June, where she could be heard to call former Cambodia leader Hong Saint, “Uncle” and criticize the Thai army against the background of deterioration of the borderline tension with Cambodia.
The call leaking from Hun Saint himself has damaged her reputation and critics accused her of undermining the country’s army.
The decision is made by Paetongtarn, the daughter of former Prime Minister Taxin Shinawatra, the Fifth Prime Minister, who will be removed from the 2008 court position.
On Friday, the nine judges of the court voted six to three against Paetongtarn, stating that her actions had violated the ethical standards expected by her service.
The court stated that Paetongtarn had a “personal connection”, which “seems to be aligned with Cambodia” and rejected its allegations that the call was “personal negotiations for … return of peace without using violence.”
In a decision, she stated that “made the public question” whether its actions “would be beneficial for Cambodia more than the interest of the nation.”
Paetongtarn acknowledged the court’s sentence, but insisted he was trying to save life.
Her appeal with Hun Saint, at one time, a close friend of her father, came when tensions rose to the border of Thailand-Kambodia, who broke out in a five-day conflict weeks later, in which dozens of people were killed and hundreds of thousands fled their homes.
The 39 -year -old Paetongtarnn joined Pheu Thai in 2021 and rose to power after her predecessor Sret Tavnin was fired by the Constitutional Court to appoint an ally in his cabinet, which was closed to attempt to bribe a judge.
Her replacement will be elected by parliament, where her party has a subtle majority after its main coalition partner – the Conservative Bhumjaithai Party, withdrew its support in terms of its call.
Parliament should not be dissolved to select a new leader, but most of the deputies must support one of the five registered candidates.
Chaikasem Nisisiri, 77 -year -old, former Minister of Justice, is the candidate of PHEU Thai, who replaces Paetongtarn. Anutin Charnvirac by Bhumjaithai is also among the front running.
The powerful Shinawatra family has chaired several Thai governments – and the removal of Paetongtarn is a blow to their political dynasty.
She became the third Shinawatar, who was interrupted by their prime ministry: her father Takin was overthrown by a military coup in 2006, and her aunt Ingluk was also removed by the Constitutional Court in 2014.
Despite his retirement from the official policy years ago, Thaksin remained extremely influential – although it is now unclear how much influence the name of Shinawatar will continue to continue to wear.
