California lawmakers signed an agreement with Uber and Lift that would allow application-based drivers to form a union and make ride-hall fare more affordable.
The agreement is a win for gig workers who have long been classified as an independent contractor and thus, ineligible for the safety of the employees ‘joint bids’ rights.
Governor Gavin News, Senate President Pro Tame Mike McGuier and Legislative Assembly Speaker Robert Revas, on Friday announced to support two pieces of law, which made a way to union app-based drivers. Assembly Bill 1340 is sponsored by SEU California and Senate Bill 371 is sponsored by Uber and Lift.
News called it a “Historic Tihasik Agreement between workers and businesses that can only supply California.” He said that labor representatives and agencies “found a common place that would empower millions of Ridesshire for millions of California as more affordable.”
The contract creates a model to be able to organize for drivers for enhanced salary, job security and other benefits.
In exchange, California regulators say they will support the law to reduce the expensive insurance coverage mandate that they have to pay to ride-helling companies. Uber and Laft have blamed this insurance money for higher rides in California and paying for low drivers.
“As Sacramento is now united in California, we are happy to see these two important laws going together in need of more affordable,” Ramona Prito, the chief of Uber’s policy for California, said in a statement.

This deal has come after a few years of spending more than $ 200 million to persuade California voters to pass the California voters to pass the California voters to pass. Gig personnel classifies as distinct contractors While giving them limited benefits.
Drivers have long criticized the system for providing widespread control over salary and inactivity, giving up limited power to affect their earnings or work conditions. Supporters of the new agreement say that it can give drivers a stronger voice to pushing back against the wrong treatment.
This agreement may have riple effects on other states. In 2024, Massachusetts voters are allowed Similar initiatives for the formation of the union of the ride-hee drivers and allowing the salary, benefits and terms of work to discuss the terms of the work.
