Online play is smoother because it eliminates input lag and instead opts to use rollback netcode. What exactly does that mean? Well, in online games, each player’s button command information takes time to reach each other’s consoles based on distance. If players push their buttons at exactly the same time, they won’t know until the information reaches them from their opponent’s console. The input delay waits to perform both actions until the console hears from its remote counterpart. This keeps the game in sync, but adds a noticeable delay to the buttons you press and what you see happening on screen.
When using rollback, your fighter acts as soon as the button is pressed without waiting for information from another console. When information from another console reaches you, the game compensates by synchronizing the game, pushing the other player forward. This gives a lag free experience and in fighting games, any input lag can feel sluggish and affect the game negatively. Rollback netcode creates a smoother experience for the player overall.
