The Mayor of Chicago has signed an order in detail that the city will oppose a potential immigration repression threatened by the Trump administration.
“We do not need, nor do we want a non -constitutional and illegal military occupation of our city,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson, Democrat. The order directs city agencies how to respond to possible actions to implement immigration.
Trump has already deployed about 2,000 soldiers in Washington and has threatened to expand the order to Chicago, which he believes is a “mess”. There are also reports that the administration is planning a rush of federal immigration agents in the city.
A White House spokesman described Johnson’s order as “stunt stuntmen”.
The order is the last chapter in the escalating feud between the White House and the State of Illinois and the local officials for violent crime and immigration.
It requires Trump and federal agents to retreat from any attempt to deploy the US Armed Forces in the city.
The order also restarts a number of existing urban policies, including the requirements that law enforcement officers carry bodily chambers and identify information, and a ban on wearing masks.
Immigration and customs law enforcement officers (ICE) were sharply criticized in other cities to conceal their identity.
Johnson said city officials would help residents understand their rights if they encounter immigration application while allowing local employees to participate in joint patrols with federal agents.
Local officials say that more than one in five residents is an immigrant, with more than half coming from Latin America countries. It is not clear how many live in Chicago without official documentation.
Trump, a Republican, said that the third largest city in America as a “Murder Field”, arguing in the city, is an emergency.
His threats to unleash the national guard are described as abuse of power by the Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker.
“Donald Trump is trying to produce a crisis, politicized Americans who serve in uniform, and continue to abuse their power to distract themselves from the pain that causes working families,” said Pritzker, Democrat.
White House spokesman Abigail Jackson said Chicago employees are doing a guerrilla crime.
“If these Democrats focused on fixing crime in their own cities, instead of making public cascades to criticize the president, their communities would be much more prosperous.”
