Arrest after fatal shooting of Ukrainian politician Andri Parubius

Suspecting the fatal shooting of prominent Ukrainian politician Andri Parubi has been arrested, said country President Volodimir Zelenski.

The 54-year-old parliamentarian was killed by an attacker posing as a courier in the western town of Lviv on Saturday, igniting Manhta.

Interior Minister of Ukraine Igor Klanko said in a statement issued in the early hours of Monday morning that the suspect had been detained in the West Kmelnitsky area.

Parubius rose to the popularity of EuroMaidan in Ukraine, who advocated more close ties with the EU and removed the pro-Russian former President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Klimenko said the preliminary investigation found that the murder was “carefully prepared” with the timetable of Parubiy and the route, as well as with an escape plan.

He added that later, the National Police of Ukraine would provide additional details.

In a social media publication, Zelenski said he had talked to Attorney General Ruslan Kravenchenko, who advised that the suspect had given an initial certificate.

“Emergency investigations are currently being taken to establish all the circumstances of this murder,” he added, and at the same time thanks to the law enforcement agencies and prosecutors for “work around the clock.”

Unsugureding footage, supposedly by the shooting, appeared to show an arms, dressed as a courier, approaching Parubius on the street, holding a weapon as he walked behind him.

At a briefing for news on Saturday, the head of police in Lviv, Alexander Schlihovski, said the attacker had “fired about eight shots of firearms.”

Sources in the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine told the BBC that the attacker had dressed to look like a worker from the delivery company GLOVO. The company said it was “deeply shocked” by the crime and would cooperate entirely with an investigation.

Parubiy has been chairman of the country’s parliament from April 2016 to August 2019.

He was one of the leaders of the demonstrations in 2013-14, who called for closer ties with the European Union. He organized his self -defense teams that kept the scattered tent camp in the heart of the capital Kiev during the protest.
