The Czech opposition leader and former Prime Minister Andrei Babis was hit in the head with a metal crutch during an election rally.
He was taken to a test hospital and dumped shortly after. A non -identified woman has also been treated in hospital because of the same incident.
The attacker was detained by police. His motive remains unclear.
The attack on Babis was widely convicted, but his party accused the government of hatred campaign “in billboards and social media.”
The incident happened during a rally in Dobbra, about 376 km (234 miles) east of the capital, Prague.
MP Ales Juchelka, who was with Babis at the rally, said the leader of the Ano party (yes) had been hit in the head several times.
He was taken to hospital by car, where after the CT, doctors throw him away.
The Czech Republic said in a brief statement of X that the suspect had been arrested by employees present at the rally “immediately after the attack.” They said the issue was investigated as a “behavior violation”, but it could be expanded if necessary.
Babis serves as the Czech Prime Minister between 2017 and 2021.
His deputy, Alena Shiller, accused the attack against “hatred distributed by ruling parties.”
“This is a direct consequence of their campaign, based on fear and division,” she said.
Prime Minister Peter Fiala wished Babis a speedy recovery and told an election rally about his party that “violence does not belong to politics.”
The Czechs must vote in a general election on October 3 and 4.
