Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will receive a presidential freedom medal, the highest civic honor, Donald Trump announced on Truth Social.
Giuliani became known as “Mayor of America” after leading New York on September 11th. While he had previously worked as a personal lawyer of Trump, the couple has since split.
The message comes two days after Giuliani received injuries to the back when a car in which he was a passenger was struck in the back, police said.
The presidential medals of freedom are awarded to people who have made “an extremely well -deserved contribution to the prosperity, values or security of the nation, world peace or other significant public or private endeavors.”
In the social post of truth, where Trump announced the nomination of Giuliani, the president called it “the largest mayor in New York’s history and just as great American patriot.”
Past fans include Mohammed Ali, Dr. Jane Gudel, Anna Wintour and Michael J. Fox, among many others.
In 2017, former President Barack Obama awarded the then Vice President Joe Biden with a freedom medal.
Giuliani has not yet commented on the announcement yet and it is unclear when he will officially receive a medal.
