Riyz KhanIndian farmer from the hilly village of Pilodi in the western Indian state of Rajasthan ended up in an unlikely spotlight.
Mor Singh, 60, never went to school, but his selfless act of handing over his house in the village of school – after he was very damaged due to heavy rains – he made him a local hero.
His modest residence in two rooms is now working as an upper primary school visiting 50-60 students from the village, he says.
Last week, the state’s government gave G -N Singh 200,000 Rupees ($ 2266, 1682 British pounds) for financial assistance for its deliberate gesture.
Riyz KhanRajasthan saw its most humid July for nearly 70 years with 285 mm of rain, registered across the country, says the Meteorological Center.
On July 25, the roof in the classroom collapsed in Pippondi, killing seven children, wounds 21 others and leaving the school for the village unusable.
Two days after the incident, Mr. Singh and his family, who included his two-year-old grandson, moved to a bamboo and Tarpaulin shed, which they placed on the grounds of land a few meters from his house.
This is not a “perfect accommodation”, but D -n SINGH is ready to launch its amenities for the future of the children, he told the BBC on the phone.
“If I had not made this quick decision, many children would have dropped. The only other school is in a neighboring village, which is a two -kilometer (1.24 miles) hike in the hills. While older students would have coped, the younger would not have,” he says.
It took him three years to build the house and he moved to her with his family 13 years ago.
Vikram Singh ChouhanThe tragedy on July 25th in Piplodi exposed the systemic problems of poor school infrastructure in Rajasthan. A recent government survey shows that over 5,600 schools in the state are in a destroyed state.
After G -N Singh turned his home into a school, the state government has declared pistols as a “model village” under a federal scheme.
This would help to attract more funds for a new school, playground, health center and other facilities, a local employee told the BBC Ajay Singh Rathore.
“Building a new school in the village will take at least one and a half years,” he added.
About 90 families, mostly nephews, live in pippings.
“We are a poor community and we have hardly seen development,” says G -N Singh.
“That is why it is essential for these children to go to school, to get an education and to achieve their goals.”
The noble act of G -N Singh made him a local celebrity.
“He is a hero for the whole village,” says Ram Dale, whose daughter was injured in the incident on July 25 and now goes to school at the residence of G -N Singh.
Another resident, Ram Kumar, said: “If he had not offered his house for the school, many of the children would have dropped. We all appreciate his gesture.”
