New year, new smartphone rumours. These rumors are not new after all. It’s been the zeitgeist since 2024 when people were betting that Apple would launch the fourth-generation iPhone SE alongside the iPhone 16. Apple will likely launch the iPhone SE this year, but it will carry a different moniker than you’re used to hearing .
The next iPhone SE will be called the iPhone 16E. Whoever broke the news posted the render Twitter/x/whatever A case that fits the phone. The iPhone 16E will have a similar design iPhone 14. Instead of rounded edges and a less than 5-inch display, the iPhone 16E could have square edges with standard volume buttons, a mute switch on the left, and a power button on the right. Apple plans to drop the home button. It was the last iPhone to offer a tactile home button 2022’s iPhone SE. Perhaps Apple has another iconic “vintage” feature that will be preserved in the iPhone 16E.
We’re still not sure about the source of the iPhone SE’s new name, as the leak has a mixed track record among Apple blogs. However, the expected name change aligns with rumors we’ve been reading about for the past year. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has an excellent track record of reporting on Apple’s next big thing, mentioned A big “shake up in the iPhone line” and Apple will launch the iPhone SE as part of the push. Gurman also reports that the model will look similar to the iPhone 14 and have a high-definition OLED display, so we’re likely looking at a larger-screen device than the third-gen iPhone SE.
What do you think the “E” in iPhone 16E stands for? My bet is on the word “economical” since this version of the iPhone usually offers the basics of life in a walled garden without all the complicated marketing jargon. Or perhaps it means iPhone “Express”. It will be something Apple Intelligence Infusion, though perhaps not as intense iPhone 16/16 Pro Can, which is why I think something as silly as “Express” might work in this situation (as you can tell I’ve never been on a product design team). I see features like a curated inbox in Mail and better Siri performance being prioritized over apps like Picture playground On a budget iPhone.
As of now, the iPhone SE is expected to launch in 2025. The third generation will launch in 2022, late winter/early spring. If analysts’ predictions of production starting in December 2024 are correct, we could be headed for the same timeframe.
