As Alkaraz joined the ATP tour as a 16-year-old, he was praised for the variety of his game, managing to combine cutting low slices with fierce shapes and skillful shots to constantly catch opponents aside and earn points in breathtaking ways.
But its ability to revive this type of quality on any surface is what sets it apart from anyone else.
Now Alkaraz has won two major strokes on each of the hard, grasses and clay surfaces – only Rafael Nadal (when 24 years old), Mats Wulander (24 years old) and Novak Djokovic (34 years old), have once achieved the same feat in the men’s game.
The speed at which Alkaraz also dials specialties is also amazing – he only took 19 tournaments to win six strokes, second only to the record of 18, set by Bjorn Borg in 1978.
Borg alone has won six shots at a younger age than Alkaraz, doing so by winning three clay in Roland Garros and three on the grass in Wimbledon.
At 22 Nadal also had six (but he won the last of those when he was a few months older than Alkaraz), while Pete Sampras was five and Wilander four.
The likes of the eight-time Wimbledon winner Roger Federer (three) and 24-time Grand Slam Champion Djokovic (one) were far behind the pace of Alkaraz at his age.
