At least 21 people were killed in a Russian air strike in a village in eastern Ukraine, local Ukrainian officials say.
The victims were ordinary people who were gathering their pensions in the village of Donetsk Yarova, said President Volodi Zelenski. Donetsk regional leader Vadim Filashkin said the emergency services were in place and as many people were injured as killed.
Yarova is north of Peloviansk, one of the big cities in the region and not far from the front line, while the Russian forces are slowly east.
If confirmed, the death number will be among the most severe attacks on Ukrainian civilians in recent weeks, 42 months in the full-scale invasion of Russia.
At least 23 people were killed at air strikes on the night of the capital of Ukraine Kiev in late August.
Over the weekend, Russia began its largest air attack on the war against Kiev so far, hitting the main government building in the capital, what Zelenski said was a “ruthless” attack aimed at prolonging war.
By publishing graphic footage from the attack on Yarova online, Zelenski said there are no “words” to describe the latest Russian strikes. There was no immediate response from the military in Russia.
Vadym Filashkin said the attack took place at 12:30 local time on Tuesday as pensions were given. He posted a photo from the scene that appeared to show a severely damaged Ukrainian postal service of the type used to distribute pensions.
Yarova sits on a key railway in Donetsk, between Liman and Izium. In addition, it is only about 6 km (3.7 miles) from the next village of Novselina, where the Russian forces are closed on the outskirts.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said that the other three people were killed in the worse Russian firing of settlements in Donetsk.
“The world should not be silent,” Zelenski said, and called for a response from both the US, Europe and the G -20 Nations Group.
