Christian Brukner refusal met with the police interview

The main suspect in the case of the high profile of Madeleine McCan’s disappearance has refused to be questioned by the Sofia police, the force said.

MET said an international request letter was sent to Christian Brukner before his forthcoming release for a separate crime, which he later rejected.

The German national Brusher, 48, has never been charged with any crime regarding McCan’s case and denies any involvement.

Madeleine disappeared into the Portuguese resort of Prai Da Luz in 2007. She and her siblings were left to sleep in a holiday apartment while her parents, Kate and Gerry, went to dinner at a nearby restaurant.

They periodically registered with the children while Kate discovered that Madeleine was missing around 10:00 pm.

Brusner is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman at her home in Prai Da Luz in 2005.

DET C Insp Mark Cranwell said Brukner remains suspected of his own Met police investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance. He is a major suspect in German and Portuguese investigations from 2020 and 2022 respectively.

“We have asked for an interview with this suspect in Germany, but for legal reasons, this can only be done through an international request letter that is presented,” said Det Ch Insp Cranwell.

“Subsequently, it was denied a suspect. In the absence of an interview, we will still continue to pursue some viable investigative investigative lines.

“We cannot provide additional information until the investigation is ongoing.”

Madeleine’s disappearance has become one of the most profile unauthorized cases of missing persons in the world.

German prosecutors have indicated evidence – including mobile phones data – showing that Brukner may have been in the area when it has disappeared, and constantly insisted on thinking that it is responsible.

However, they did not find strong enough evidence to charge.

Brukner, who spent many years in Algarve, was a drift, a small criminal and a convicted sexual criminal. It has several previous sentences, including for sexual abuse of children in 1994 and 2016.
