January 2025 is finally here—and with it, the return of the show you split three years ago and It seemed like it would never come back. We are talking, of course, about break up, 2022 Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Mystery That came out of nowhere and Instantly became a fan favorite. The first season ended on a cliffhanger all timer and fans are eagerly waiting for the second season, Which is now coming up on January 17, since when

Adam Scott, Its stars break upIt gets. Scott is no stranger to hit TV shows, but with break upHe went from starring in this weird show that nobody knew anything about to leading one of the hottest shows on TV. Suddenly fans approached him on the street, he was listening to the world speak from the show out, and everything about the long-delayed second season became super secret. In a video chat last month, io9 spoke with Scott about those. He discusses his initial reaction to season two, what the fans have been like, and how Lumon has changed around the office. And don’t worry, the interview is spoiler-free for season 2.

Jermaine Lussier, io9: Fans have had to wait nearly three years to find out what happens next break up Crew, but I’m wondering, how long did you have to wait to get the scripts and find out what was going on, and what was your reaction to getting them?

Adam Scott: Have the actual script first, Dan [Erickson, showrunner] Seasons tend to map out. So I had a rough idea of the direction and the arc of the season before we started getting the scripts. So it was really fun to see how far he was going to take the story this season. Because the first season, basically, the story went a little further than it ended. And then Ben [Stiller, executive producer] It was like, “Oh, that line, ‘She’s alive,’ that’s a great place to end the season.” So Dan found this to be the borderline of the season. So it’s really interesting and fun to see how far we’re going to go and what it’s going to be. So I sort of got that information before any kind of script.

io9: And during that wait, are people coming up to you asking when the show is coming back? What is that like?

Scott: Yeah, and I think it was September or something, Apple announced a January 17th release date. And being able to tell people a date was so cool. Because multiple times a day, people are asking me where season two is. And I get it. It’s been a while. So it’s great to be able to say “January 17”. But now, it’s coming in a few weeks. So that’s great. It’s so great that people were as patient as they were and were willing to wait this long.

io9: We didn’t really have a choice, but I agree.

Scott: Yes, it’s true.

io9: So I’ve watched a few episodes from the season and without spoiling anything it seems like Mark is totally invested in getting answers. You are obviously always the main character, but this season, but I almost saw him as a stand-in for the audience. He’s not playing around. Do you agree with this and how has it changed your performance this season?

Scott: Well, I think that piece of information that Mark discovered at the end of season one… In season one, we saw him gradually become disillusioned with Lumon, a place he believed in wholeheartedly. And his whole identity and life was based on space and he became disillusioned with it. But I think when the ninth episode rolled around and they ran away, he felt he had reached the ceiling of what he thought might be Lumon’s inferiority complex. So finding this piece of information, I think, blew the roof off any expectations for what he thought was, quote unquote, “evil” or what horrible things a company or people could do to each other. So I think that we’re starting season two with him being thrown back into this situation where he’s now beyond disillusioned. Now he’s in a place where he needs answers and needs to know exactly what he should do with this information and if he has any way to get it.

io9: And it’s a unique show because you have ins and outs. And they are different people, obviously. So I wonder, am I right in assuming that it’s more fun to play Mark?

Scott: I don’t know if I like playing them both. I think they are different parts of the same person. And I think it’s all the same guy. But there are things I like playing with both of them.

io9: Got it. Now, there are so many shows these days, especially with streaming, that a hit is actually rare. Looking back at the first season, at what point did you realize, “Oh, I’m on a show everyone’s talking about”?

Scott: We did season one in a bubble. We had no idea if anyone was going to see it or like it. So when it came out, we all held our breath. But I think when I started hearing the words “in” and “out” from the show, things like culture being mentioned on podcasts or wherever, I think that’s when I knew we were onto something. And it was very strange to hear it there. Suddenly we had to start sending secure emails with code words, scripts and stories or whatever. The whole of season one, which took place a few years apart, nobody cared about what we were doing. We had nothing to hide. And suddenly, we were doing this kind of locked-down secret thing. And it was really, really funny and weird to suddenly have this show that people were kind of paying close attention to.

io9: And someone who has done so much terrible TV, what is it? break up Does that feel different?

Scott: I don’t know. I think that the world that Dan and Ben have created is like nothing else out there. And I think that’s a testament to the audience that they’re willing to stick with a show that’s throwing so many curveballs and so many mysteries at them.

break up Season two premieres on January 17, with new episodes every Friday through March 21. We’ll have more from the cast and crew in the coming weeks.
