Best Portable Chargers (2025): iPhones, iPads, Laptops & More

Years ago, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 gained notoriety when its battery caught fire in several incidents. Since then there has been a steady stream of similar events, though isolated. However, despite the high-profile coverage of battery mishaps, most Li-ion batteries are safe.

The chemical reactions that take place inside lithium-ion cells are complex, but like any battery there is a negative and a positive electrode. In lithium batteries, the negative is a lithium-carbon compound, and the positive is cobalt oxide (although many battery manufacturers are moving away from cobalt). These two compounds create a reaction that is safe when controlled and provides power to your device. The feedback goes out of control though, causing the earbuds to melt in your ears. Any number of things can change a safe response to an uncontrolled response: excessive heat, physical damage during use, physical damage during manufacturing, or using the wrong charger.

Three basic rules that have kept me safe through dozens and dozens of battery tests (so far):

  1. Avoid cheap cords, chargers and outlet adapters.
  2. Make sure the batteries are not exposed to excessive heat (over 110 degrees Fahrenheit).
  3. Inspect the battery regularly for signs of damage.

It is most important to avoid cheap wall-outlet adapters, cords and chargers. These are possible sources of your problem. See a charger on Amazon that’s $20 cheaper than the competition? It’s not worth it. They likely cut prices by skipping insulation, ditching power-management tools, and ignoring electrical safety basics. Price alone is no guarantee of safety, either. Buy from reputable companies and brands.

Then there is the heat. Too much of it can cause all sorts of problems, both in terms of discharge and safety. Avoid heat and pay attention when charging your battery. If your device overheats while charging, this could be a sign of a problem. Likewise, be careful of any bulging, swelling, or otherwise deforming the battery.
