A federal jury in the state of Virginia in the United States has charged former FBI Director James Komi on two charges related to his testimony before Congress.
G -K Kom, who has long attracted the criticism of US President Donald Trump, has been accused of lies of Congress during his testimony in September 2020, whether he has authorized the expiration of classified information to the media.
In response to the prosecution, Komi declared himself innocent and said he had “great confidence in the federal judicial system”.
The prosecution comes days after Trump called on the senior law enforcement officer, Prosecutor General Pam Bondi, to investigate his political opponents more aggressively, including the Komi.
The probe is led by Lindsay Haligan, a US lawyer for the Eastern district of Virginia, who was previously a personal lawyer of Trump and took on his new role on Monday.
The presence of G -K Komi – where the allegations are officially read before the defendant in court – was designated on the morning of October 9 in Alexandria, Virginia at 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT), according to the US partner of the BBC.
Bondi said in a statement that the prosecution “reflects the commitment of this Ministry of Justice to occupy those who abuse the authorities responsible for misleading the American people.”
Komi is charged with one census of false statements and another for preventing justice.
The first issue refers to G -n Komi, who tells the Senate Judicial Committee that he did not “authorize anyone else in the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports” about his talks with Trump to investigate the FBI about whether Russia intervened in the 2016 presidential election.
The second census claims that the Komi “corrupts” corrupts to influence, impede and prevent “the investigation of the Senate Judicial Committee by making false statements to it.
The Ministry of Justice has asked the big jury to examine three accusations against G -N Komi, but this can only agree that two of them are supported by sufficient evidence to be tried in court.
The third issue was another accusation for making false statements.
A large jury is a group of citizens created by a prosecutor to determine if there is sufficient evidence to raise the accusations. Legally, it determines whether there is a probable reason to believe that a crime has been committed.
Mr. Komi is the first former director of FBI to be charged with a crime and claims he has not lied to an oath.
If found guilty, he could face up to five years in prison.
A lawyer at Komi, Patrick Fitzgerald, issued a short stay, saying that his client denied the accusations, adding: “We are looking forward to avenge him in the courtroom.”
G -N Komi said in a separate video statement: “My family and I have known for years that there has been costs to straighten Donald Trump.”
“We will not live on our knees and you should not,” he continued, adding, “And, I am innocent. So, let’s have experience.”
Ghetto imagesThe allegations were filed shortly before the five -year statute of limitations expired on Tuesday.
The case was recently handed over to a new prosecutor after Eric Seibert, the original US lawyer, who monitors the case, was fired by the Trump administration. He was replaced by G -ja Khaligan.
According to the billing documents, Komi made a presumed false statement to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary “deliberately and consciously”, since the Komi directed an unnamed person “to serve as an anonymous source in news reports on the FBI investigation.”
This meant that the Komi “corrupts seek to influence, impede and prevent the due and proper exercise of the power of investigation” by the committee on September 30, 2020, the document said.
At this hearing in 2020, Koma confirmed his testimony for 2017 that he did not reveal or approved the disclosure of information about the FBI investigations either of Trump or his presidential rival in 2016 Hillary Clinton.
A series of notes from the Komi, which describes his conversations with Trump in detail, were revealed to the media in 2017.
In them, Mr. Komi writes that Trump has proposed to refuse an investigation into the national security advisor Michael Flynn with Russia.
The case is considered accusations of the largest profile of a public figure during Trump’s second term.
Trump recently expressed his dissatisfaction that the prosecutor’s office of his public critics such as Komi, Senator Adam Schiff and New York General Leticia James has taken so long.
“We can’t slow down anymore, it kills our reputation and authenticity. They perceive me twice and have been charged (5 times!), Over nothing. Justice must be serviced now !!!” Trump told Truth Social last week.
After charges, Trump called the Komi “one of the oldest human beings to which this country was once exposed.”
“He is so bad for our country, so long and now at the beginning of being responsible for his crimes against our nation. Make America again great!”
Asked about the Komi hours before the prosecution was printed, Trump called it a “bad man”, but said he had no advanced knowledge of his prosecution.
Lori Levenson, a former Federal Prosecutor and Professor of Law at Loyola Merimount University, said it would be a very challenging pursuit case.
“It is often the word of the defendant against someone else and you will have to look at both of them,” she says BBC News.
“And even if James Komi has confused things, it does not mean that he deliberately or deliberately lied to Congress. So proving that this will be the heart of the case.”
D -Ja Levenson also said that this criminal persecution and Trump’s public pressure to continue on it suggests that the traditional firewall between the White House and the US Department of Justice “collapsed with this case.”
Several Democrats have condemned the allegations, with Hakem Democratic Hake leader denied them as a “shameful attack on the rule of law” and promised “accountability” for “every accomplice in this malignant corruption.”
D -K Komi was the director of the FBI between 2013 and 2017.
He had a tumultuous mandate that included the supervision of the high investigation into the democratic candidate Hilary Clinton just weeks before the 2016 election, which she lost to Trump.
He was fired by Trump against the backdrop of an investigation into Russian election intervention in 2016.
This is not the first investigation by the former FBI chief that launches this year.
He was investigated by the Secret Service after sharing and then deleted a social media publication from Seashells, saying the “8647” numbers, which Republicans claim to be an incitement to violence against US President Donald Trump.
The number 86 is a Slang term whose definitions include “rejecting” or “getting rid”, according to Meriam-Wester’s dictionary, which also noted that it was recently used as a term that means “killing” while Trump is the 47th President of the United States.
In July, the daughter of G -n Komine Mauren Komi was fired from her role as a federal prosecutor in the southern district of New York. She was not given a reason to be removed from the office where she worked for 10 years, according to media reports.
Earlier this month, she is suing Trump’s administration for dismissal.
The Ministry of Justice is fired by lawyers working in cases that angered the president, including a special investigation by the Trump prosecutor.
