Canada, which the post office workers have launched a national strike after the federal government authorizes widespread reforms that will close some post offices and put an end to certain types of deliveries.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) called the proposed reforms “Attack against our post office and workers” as it announced the job.
The strike of 55,000 Union members comes amid a continued dispute over the payment and benefits for postal workers who led to a weekly walk late last year.
The Canada Post said operations would be excluded during the strike, leaving the mail and parcels that were not delivered for millions and added that this would increase the severe financial woes of the corporation.
The increased changes announced by the Federal Government follow years of financial losses suffered by the Post Office, which faces reduced demand and solid competition from private parcel delivery services.
Public Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound said on Thursday that Canada Post lost $ 1 billion.
“Canada Post is an effective insolvent and multiple savings are not a long -term solution,” he said in a statement.
The proposed changes will monitor the closure of several post offices in areas that have once been rural and will give the service more flexibility to raise prices. The service can also reduce the types of parcels delivered by AIR and rely more on ground transport to save costs.
A significant proposal will be to discontinue home supplies, which will see parcels delivered to the mailboxes in the community instead of in front of people’s doors.
About four million addresses still receive this service in the country.
“The goal is, after all, to save Canada post,” Lightbound told reporters.
The Union of Postal Workers said the proposals “will only undermine the public service” and will not cope with the needs of the customers.
Canada Post said it was “disappointed that the Union has chosen to escalate its strike, which will further worsen the financial position of Canada Post.”
“The national strike of any length will affect the Canadian and Business Service long after the strike is completed,” she added.
In a statement on Friday, the Canadian Independent Business Association warned the impact of work action on small business in the country will be “massive”.
“Doing this for the critical season of retail shipping is particularly disturbing,” the statement said.
The government’s social security checks will continue to be delivered during the strike.
Last year, workers started a weekly strike over pay and improved working conditions.
The negotiations on the payment dispute remain unresolved.
