The shooter, who killed four people in an office building in Manhattan, had a chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease, often associated with high -contact sports like American football, according to a New York medical specialist office.
In July, 27-year-old Shane Tamura was driving from Las Vegas to New York with a rifle in the style of attack, shooting four in the skyscraper of Avenue Park before committing suicide.
Police believe he is targeting the offices of the National Football League (NFL) that were inside the building.
In notes left in the site, he reports that Tamura accuses NFL of concealing CTE effects and demanded that his brain be studied.
CTE can only be diagnosed after death.
The chief medical specialist in New York said the shooter’s autopsy confirmed that he had a “low CTE” and the diagnosis was “unambiguous”.
The disease is caused by multiple strokes in the head and has a bee in the ebrations of dozens of former NFL players. The science around her is developing, said the medical specialist. It is associated with symptoms, including memory loss, depression and progressive dementia.
“The physical and mental manifestations of CTE remain in the process of study,” they said.
Tamura, a former high school football player who has not played in NFL, opened a fire in a building where the US Football League headquarters is located. But he took the wrong elevator and went to another part of the building.
His alleged suicide note says “Study my brain, please,” according to a senior employee who speaks to ABC News. “I’m sorry,” he wrote too.
Police say it is known that Tamura has problems with mental health.
Among those killed during the mass shooting were NYPD officer Didarul Islam; Wesley Lepatner, an employee of the financial giant Blackstone; and Julia Hayman, an employee at Rudin Management.
NFL Craig Clements employee was also seriously injured.
