Three suspect members of the Palestinian armed group Hamas have been arrested for alleged planning of attacks against Israeli and Jewish institutions in Germany, prosecutors say.
The three men – two of whom are German citizens and one of whom was born in Livatz – is suspected of purchased firearms and ammunition from the summer to be used in the attacks, the German prosecutor’s office said.
Men, called Ahd Al D, Wael FM and Ahmad I, were arrested in Berlin on Tuesday, the office added. Their arrests came the day before Yom Kippur, the lightest day of the Jewish calendar.
Hamas controls gas and is considered an EU terrorist organization.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Wednesday that during the arrests, “various weapons, including an attack on the AK 47 and several pistols, and a significant amount of ammunition, were found.”
He added: “Weapons were intended for use by Hamas in attacks on killings against Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany.”
German media reports that men were arrested when they met for the transfer of a weapon in the capital.
Police searches were also held in the cities of Leipzig and Oberhausen during the arrests in Berlin, according to Der Spiegel.
The three are charged with preparing a serious act of violence threatening the German state and membership in a foreign terrorist organization.
The suspects will appear before a federal judge on Thursday, said the Federal Prosecutor.
The arrests come after four Hamas members went to court in Berlin in February, charged with thinking attacks against Jewish sites in Europe.
