Four people have been diagnosed with sepsis after eating at a luxury restaurant in Stockholm as part of the suspect epidemic of listeria.
Health authorities say at least 15 people have been treated or have been monitored in a hospital after a meal in Coco and Carmen, a high-end place in the Swedish capital Esmalm.
Most of the dozens of those affected are not seriously ill, staff in Stockholm said, and so far none of those admitted to hospital have required intensive treatment.
It is rare for food contaminated by listeria, bacterium, to cause a very serious infection known as listeriosis. People with listeriosis can develop sepsis, a life -threatening over -reaction from the immune system.
The regional body confirmed that the tracking of infections, initially covering guests who ate at the restaurant between September 25 and 27, has since been expanded to include people who have dinner there since September 23 and 24.
“Those with ongoing symptoms such as fever, vomiting or diarrhea are now recommended to visit the Hospital Division for Emergency Results,” said Maria Roten Östlund, a doctor for infectious diseases, in front of the state presenter SVT.
Regional health officials have warned in a press release that “a large number of people may have been infected” and stressed that listeria is the most debel risk to pregnant women, the elderly and those with a weakened immune system.
SVT reports that 80 people have registered that they have food poisoning after a meal at the restaurant with a city tracking tool last Saturday and Thursday morning, and 400 people have been associated with tracing infections.
Coco & Carmen temporarily closed until investigating the cause of the suspected hearth continues.
The restaurant said in a statement that he had always passed food safety checks and cooperated with the authorities.
“We take this extremely seriously, and since the well-being of our guests is our top priority, we voluntarily closed to further notification,” the owners said, adding that they hoped to reopen on October 7th.
Joakim Almquist, the cook and the co -owner, said to SVT, “The only thing I can do is sincerely apologize because I suffer from these people.”
Listeria is usually found in the soil, water and animals and can spread through contaminated food, especially when stored in cold conditions for long periods.
While most people experience only mild symptoms that resemble gastric flu, this can lead to serious diseases such as meningitis or sepsis. The incubation period can extend from several days to three weeks.
