The great Duke Henri of Luxembourg gave up, passing the throne to his largest son, the Grand Duke Guillaume.
The new Grand Duke swore to ensure that the monarch looks to the future, saying, “I want to be the Grand Duke, who builds bridges between generations, between tradition and innovation.”
His father, who has served to a great extent to the symbolic role for 25 years, announced that he plans to abdicate at the end of last year as he delivered his Christmas speech.
