The Israelis’ families held hostages in Gaza have told the BBC that they hoped that the US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war will return his loved ones to home.
Vicky Cohen, whose son Nimrod is among the 20 hostages held in Gaza, who is still thought to be alive, said she woke up on Saturday with a sense of “hope and anticipation”, but also “fear something will go wrong.”
“It’s a fragile situation and we don’t want to be disappointed again. And yet I feel that I will see Nimrod again soon and I can hug him (him).”
Nimrod, who is already 21, was a 19-year-old soldier when he was abducted from Hamas near the Gaza border in the attacks on October 7, 2023. A total of 251 people were taken hostage that day, and about 1200 others were killed.
Friday, Hamas agreed to release all other Israeli hostages – Life and dead, ”but said he wanted additional negotiations on a number of key points outlined in the US peace plan.
After Hamas presented his answer, Trump posted to the Truth Social “I believe they were ready for lasting peace” as he called on Israel “immediately stop the bombing over Gaza so that we can bring the hostages safely and quickly!”
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel “is preparing to immediately apply the first phase of Trump’s plan for the immediate release of all hostages.”
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas are now expected to resume in Egypt in the coming days.
Woody Goran, whose cousin Tal Haimi was killed in the attacks on October 7 and his body, taken to Gaza, where he remained, said he was optimistic that a deal would be achieved.
“We see President Trump removing his leg and leaving everyone behind him, including the Arab countries and the Israeli Prime Minister,” he said.
“We have to be sure that there is a better future for the Israelis and the Palestinians. Now is the moment of action, not for words.”
His views were voiced by other possessors on Saturday.
In a statement, the hostage’s family Eitan Horn said that for the first time for such long and painful months, our hearts dare to believe that the release of Eitan – and all 47 hostages (alive and dead) – at last it may be close. This will soon be home. “
But they added, “Our hope is hardened by great fear.”
“Until they return, they remain hungry, tortured and in a constant danger of death.”
Jill Dickman told the BBC that he knew too well what it means to miss a chance to deal with fire.
His cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage by Kibbutz Beaeri and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza almost a year later. The Israeli military said she and five more hostages had been killed shortly before his troops reached them.
“What we saw yesterday is that Hamas gave an answer – they had some agreements with Trump’s plan and some disagreements, but the main thing for me is that they are ready to go through it,” he said.
“We had so many other chances before being missed,” but this is “a very, very important stage in the process … and maybe we are approaching this war.”
