A wave of defensive technology startups in Silicon Valley has attracted billions for funding and reshaping America’s national security.
Anduril IndustriesRecently valuable With a $ 30.5 billion after its last funding round, it is one of the so-called “uncomplicated” complaints that dispute the dominance of hereditary performers called “prime“as Lockheed Martin., Northrop Grumman., Boeing., Common dynamicsand RTX (Former Raytheon).
“There is more money than ever, which we call the” neo -complained “James Darby, co -founder and director of autonomy in the investment union Milvet Angels, or MVAto say CNBCS “This is still part of the overall budget, but the trend is positive.”
Other examples of defense technology startups challenging the actors include SpaceX and Palantir Technologiessaid Darby, who is also a member of the Department of Innovation of the US Department of Defense.
Unlike pries, these startups are faster, more slender and software, such as many of them build things that can help to close “critical gaps in technology that are really important for national security,” says Ernestin Fu Mak, co-founder of MVA and founder of Brave Capital, a risky company.
Funding for US -based defense -based company is about $ 38 billion in the first half of 2025 and may exceed its 2021 PIC if the pace remains permanently for the rest of the year, according to JpMorganS
As the global landscape of war has changed in recent decades, US Department of Defense is identified some technologies which are crucial to national security, including hypersensory, energy resistance, space technology, integrated sensory and cyber.
“In the world after 9/11, the entire Ministry of Defense effectively focuses on … the global war with terrorism. These were our military against rebels, guerrillas, asymmetrical wars, relatively low -tech fighters in most cases,” Darby said.
But today the war is more focused on “great power of power,” Mack said.
Battlefield is changing and new technologies are needed … The war is no longer limited to land, sea, air. There are also cyber and space domains that have been challenged.

“The focus is more on the deterrence and competition of (opponents) in these very high-tech, multi-dined conflicts,” Mack added. “The battlefield is changing and new technologies are needed … War is no longer limited to land, sea, air. There are also cyber and space areas that have been challenged.”
Today, some of these silicone valleys “Non -infiri” develop not only weapons but also dual -use technologies that can be applied both commercially and military.
“So things like artificial intelligence and autonomy have broad, covering commercial applications, but they are also obviously a multiplier of power in a military context,” Darby said. “(Department of War) quickly evaluates and accepts these dual -use technologies … They send signals to the investment world, to the industrial base of defense that the US government needs these things.”
This direction from the government, in turn, provided a clear and strategic roadmap for both investors and entrepreneurs, Mack said.
On September 17, MVA exited Stelt Mode after quietly supporting some leading launch technologies since 2021.
Today, Mak says that approximately 250 Syndicate members include the founders of technology, Wall Street financiers, companies, intelligence officers, former military leaders and the Navy. Together they are Investing in companies Like Anduril Industries, Shield Ai, Hermeus, Ursa Major and Aetherflux.
“Overall, we believe that” neo -complained “cannot exist in the abstract. They require people – people who carry technical expertise who carry a deep sense of mission and who contribute to complementary voices and talents. Together, this coalition forms what we get used to and call the “new security”, Mack said.
She added that modern national security requires both “the warrior’s insight for the battlefield” and “the aspiration of the builder for innovation”.
“Working together with engaged, informed patriots, whose participation strengthens our defensive ecosystem and enhances the tissue of national security itself,” Mack said.
Mack and Darby are
“You see these technologists, these builders … Building defense technologies and the reason why they do this is not to initiate conflict, but rather to create a credible deterrent that discourages aggression,” Mack said.
“No one in the defense technique is looking for war, more recently, he is looking to deter him and wants opponents to think twice before threatening peace and stability,” Mack added.
