The death toll of the school’s collapse in Indonesia has increased to 54, authorities said, with rescuers still looking for more than a dozen missing people.
Hundreds of students, most of them teenage boys, had gathered for prayers at Al Hosini’s Islamic Interior in Eastern Java when It collapsed last Monday while under construction.
The Disaster Mittening Agency in Indonesia says it is the most deadly catastrophe in the country this year. Rescuers are expected to complete the search for 13 casualties trapped under the rubble by the end of the day.
Investigators are still looking for the cause of the crash. Some officials have said the two -storey building fails because its base is unstable.
“Of all the disasters in 2025, natural or not, there were not as many dead casualties as those in Sidoirgio,” Iravan, a deputy at the disaster mitigation agency, told a press conference.
The fee includes at least two people who were released from the debris but later died in hospital.
Al Hosini is a traditional Islamic boarding school in Indonesia, known as Pesantren.
Many pesantine work unofficially, without strong adjustment or constant monitoring. It is unclear whether Al Hosini was authorized to undertake additional construction.
Search and rescue operations were challenging because of the way the building collapsed, leaving only narrow gaps for rescuers to maneuver, authorities said last week.
The survivors have talked about their excruciating escapes in the local media.
Mohammed Ridzhalul Qoib told Detik News that he first “heard the sound of falling rocks”, which “stronger and stronger”.
The 13-year-old ran to the door immediately, and until he escaped, he was wounded by falling debris from the roof.
