Police in Belgium have arrested three people suspected of thinking an attack on Prime Minister Bart de Waver.
The alleged plot is described by prosecutors as a “terrorist attack inspired by jihadists” on prime minister and other politicians.
Authorities have found a suspected makeshift explosive device and evidence that the suspects are planning to use a drone during searches in a plumb, Antwerp, near the Prime Minister’s private residence.
The targets envisaged were not stated by the prosecutor’s office, but the Deputy Minister Maxim Ptrot said De Waver was among them.
“The news of a planned attack aimed at Prime Minister Bart de Waver is extremely shocking,” a pre -the -X post on Thursday wrote.
“He emphasizes that we are facing a very true terrorist threat and that we must remain vigilant,” he added.
Later, Flemish reports suggest that Antwerp Els Van Disburg mayor may have also been directed. Dutch anti -Islamic leader Geert Wilders has decided not to participate in a Dutch radio election debate over reports that he may have been a goal.
Defense Minister Theo Franken failed to confirm whether anyone else had been directed, but said he knew it was not.
Franken told the Flemish public operator VRT “This is terrible for Bart and his family, and of course he is Islamic again.”
The minister added that the drone technology provides great opportunities, but it is also risks and they are becoming “more and more dangerous”.
Ann Lukoviac, a spokesman for the federal prosecutor, said this was the first time there were signs that Belgium could be directed with a drone, “although the phenomenon is already there in neighboring countries.”
The three persons who were arrested on suspicion of an attempt at terrorist murder and participation in the activities of a terrorist group, all live in Antwerp, according to the prosecutor’s office.
The suspects were born in 2001, 2002 and 2007 and since then one has been released. Belgian reports claim that the largest was released on Thursday night due to lack of evidence.
Others were still questioned and expected to appear before an investigative judge on Friday.
Federal prosecutors said they were removed after a judge ordered searching their homes in the city by police officers supported by explosive dogs.
It was during these searches that they discovered a device that “has strong similarities with an impromptu explosive device,” Federal Prosecutor Ann Franson said at a press conference on Thursday.
The searches also revealed a “bag of steel balls” and a 3D printer, with “indications that they intend to use a drone to attach a payload,” she added.
Franco said that 80 investigations of terrorism were discovered in Belgium this year – more than the total number of cases in 2024.
In April, five people were convicted of plotting in 2023 to attack De Waver while he performed as mayor of Antwerp.
Arriving at the Prime Minister’s cabinet in Brussels on Friday, De Waver gave his thumbs to reporters. He then strives to light up the situation by posting a photo of himself on Instagram while sitting on the sofa of his office with his gray cat Maximus.
“Maxim, can you catch a drone?” De Wever writes in a balloon speech. “Catch a dream?”, “Replies the cat,” I’m there with the best of them. “
