Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande Break Down Wicked’s Deleted Scenes

“Bock and Elphaba Talk”

“I love the train station scene with Bok (Ethan Slater) and Elphaba (Erivo) … The first time I read the script was the line Bok said, ‘Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought we were being honest,’ me and my acting coach Nancy Banks, we put a lot of heart around because we were like, ‘That’s the best line in the whole movie.’ I think there’s a lot of great work in that scene, so I miss it,” Grande told Variety.

He also mentions it wicked Commentary: “From the moment I read this script, my favorite line was Bok’s. I thought that was one of the most important lines in the whole thing. And I love that scene, so I hope it sees the light of day.”

The scene depicts the moment where Elfie asks Bok to be honest with Nessa about his true feelings and Bok says that he should do the same to Fiero. However, Elfie plays her feelings so close to the chest that she can’t even admit to herself that she has a crush on her best friend’s boyfriend, even though it’s obvious to her friend Bok.

Erivo shared how many friendships have been severed, that one in particular. “I thought it was a special line. I thought it was important for people to be like, ‘Oh,’” she told Bock about admitting Elfie’s true feelings. “And that’s actually a really important relationship from the book, that they’re actually friends.”

“Goodbye Train Platform”

Another clip that was cut is when Glinda and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) come to stand up for Elphaba when her father, Governor Throop (Andy Nyman), continues to mock her despite inviting her to the Emerald City. Morribal in particular calls out to him fiercely. “I loved that moment because it felt like people were holding him,” Erivo explained to Variety.

The “Toss Toss” clip was one in which Grande and Erivo laughed at the commentary and talked about the extended cut that was cut. “It’s a choice. We’re trying not to break.” Grande says, “I think we need a whole string out of Elfie toss toss. funny I just want that whole 12 hours.”

When including deleted scenes wicked The home release isn’t actually 12 hours, we like to imagine that Grande explained about this moment, “It was when John was laughing under the bed. We were all laughing. We tossed different ball gowns and tosses.”

“The Promise of Elphaba”

One of the key takeaways from this deleted scene is Elphaba asking Glinda to come with her to the Emerald City and, later, that fateful choice in “Defying Gravity.” It all goes back to the moment where Elphaba falls asleep in the classroom and Glinda watches as Elfie and Fierro leave with the lion cubs. There is jealousy but Grande points out that it’s not what you’d think, at least not yet.

“I know she’s jealous that you didn’t take her, but I don’t think for a second that it would cross her mind that anything else could happen,” she said as Glinda felt something like Elfie chose Fierro over her. Erivo added at the time that, “I don’t think he’s going to let anything happen”, given Elfie’s growing feelings for Fierro for help. Still, Grande added, “He might know something.”

However, it boils down to Gelfi Shippers’ knowledge of how the film’s true love story is between the two main characters and their friendship is the heart of the film. In this scene, Galinda (as she is still known at this point in the film) reveals that she does not want to be left behind, and Elphaba promises that she will take him with her. As Erivo explains, “What you don’t know is that a scene occurs before we get here,” just before the wizard’s invitation arrives; Fortunately, Deleted Scenes now fills that gap.

Both actors agreed that they loved the moment, but understood why it was cut. “We have to go to the Emerald City, it’s been two hours,” Grande joked.

Gelphie shows more intensity in this clip that shows their train ride and the characters’ “they’re just roommates” closeness. Erivo revealed, “We took a lot of pictures on this train. So much and none of it made it … I really enjoyed our little moment on the train because I thought it was really funny.” Funny—and bittersweet, because the “One Short Day” sequence is pretty much the only time they’re together outside of Shiz, everything changes. To feel what might happen before doing for good.
