Mass shooting at a crowded bar in southern US in South Carolina left four people killed and at least 20 injured, staff said.

Hundreds of people were gathered at the popular Bar on St. Elena Island in the early hours of Sunday morning when a shooting broke out, which caused many casualties and witnesses to run to a nearby shelter business, according to Borfort County sheriff.

Four people were declared dead at the bar, and at least 20 were injured, including four who were sent to local hospitals in critical condition, the Sheriff’s Service said.

The incident is still investigating, and the Sheriff Service is considering possible suspects, the announcement said.

When police arrived and the first responding, they found several people suffering from firearms, a sheriff said.

It is unclear whether the shooting was arbitrary or targeted, and a spokesman for the sheriff service declined to share more details.

The bar where the shooting was held, the Bar and Grill of Willie offers Gula -inspired cuisine and tells its website that it aims to spread the “heart spirit of the Gula Gyche’s culture”. The people of Gula gouce are descendants of Africans who are enslaved on plantations along the US Southeast Coast, including South Carolina.

“A completely broken heart to learn about the devastating shooting in Beopher County,” wrote South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mace at X.

“Our prayers are with the victims, their families and all are affected by this horrific act of violence.”

Willie did not immediately answer a request for a BBC comment.
