The Alphabet of Google’s Mother company will invest $ 15 billion (£ 11.29 billion) to build an AI data center in Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
The facility, which will be created in the port city of Visakhapatnam, will be part of the Google Global Network from AI Centers, distributed in 12 countries.
“This is the largest AI center in which we will invest anywhere in the world, outside the United States,” said Thomas Curien, CEO of Google Cloud, at an event at Capital Delhi on Tuesday, adding that the investment will be distributed over five years.
The announcement comes at a time when US President Donald Trump asks US companies to prioritize internal investment.
India has emerged as a key destination for AI data centers. Low data costs in the country and the rapidly increasing base from Internet users have made a cloud and AI expansion center for technology giants.
Alphabet Sundar Pichai CEO said the facility “will bring our leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovations and stimulating growth across the country.”
An official project finalization agreement will be signed on Tuesday, said the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
“This is a large -scale jump for the digital future, the innovation and the global situation of our country,” said the Minister of Technology of the State Nara Lokesh.
The project will combine cloud and AI infrastructure with renewable energy systems and expanded fiber-optic network.
The project is part of the Government’s plan of Andhra Pradesh to develop 6GW capacity of the Data Center by 2029, according to Bloomberg News.
Data centers are physical equipment that has computer and network equipment that organizations use to collect, process, store and distribute data.
They contain servers, storage systems and network equipment such as routers and firewalls, together with the necessary power and cooling systems to control them.
In Andhra Pradesh, the government offers subsidized land and electricity to attract global investors.
The India Data Industry has grown rapidly in the last five years, crossing the 1GW capacity sign in 2024 and almost tripled its 2019 level, according to the Global Professional Services Company of Jll’s India Center Dynamics 2024 reportS
