Nicolas Sarkozy has become the first former French president to go to prison after beginning a five-year sentence for conspiring to fund his election campaign with money from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy, who was president from 2007-2012, is appealing his sentence at La Santé prison, where he will occupy a small cell in the prison’s isolation wing.

The BBC’s Paris correspondent Hugh Schofield described the jailing as a “great moment” for France.
