OpenAI announced On Tuesday it is launching a new Internet browser called Atlas that integrates directly with it chatgpt. Atlas includes features such as a sidebar window that people can use to ask ChatGPT questions about the web pages they visit. There is also an AI the agent which a user can click around and complete tasks.
“We think AI presents a rare, once-in-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a livestream announcing Atlas. “Tabs were great, but we haven’t seen much browser innovation since then.”
Atlas debuted as a Silicon Valley race to use Generative AI To reshape how people experience the Internet. Google has announced a slew of AI features for its popular Chrome browser, including a “sparkle” button that launches its Gemini chatbot. Chrome remains Most used browser Worldwide
OpenAI said the Atlas browser will be available to ChatGPT users worldwide on MacOS starting today. Windows and mobile options are currently working. Atlas is free to use, although its agent features are reserved for OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus or subscribers ChatGPT Pro plan.
“We’ve made some major upgrades to search in ChatGPT when accessed through Atlas,” said Ryan O’Rook, OpenAI’s lead designer for the browser, during the livestream. If a user asks for a movie review in the Atlas search bar, a chatbot-style answer will pop up first, rather than the more traditional collection of blue links users can expect when searching the web through Google.
