King Charles III became the first head of the Church of England to pray publicly with the Pope. The BBC’s Mark Lowen was in St Peter’s Square for the service – held in the Sistine Chapel – which he described as “a hugely symbolic moment in theological history”.
The Queen was seen at the ceremony wearing white, having previously followed the dress code of wearing black when she met the Pope earlier in the day – seen as a sign of respect.
The service in the Sistine Chapel brought together clergy and choirs from both the Catholic Church and the Church of England, of which the king is supreme governor.
