Two nuclear power plant cooling towers have been toppled in the German town of Gundremingen, a fixture of the landscape since the 1980s.

Thick clouds of white smoke and dust rose into the air as the towers collapsed during a controlled demolition with explosives.

The nuclear plant has been idle for four years, its demolition part of the gradual phase-out of nuclear power in Germany.
