Granted, that’s probably the case for a big guy like me (6′ 4″, 255 lbs, and with very broad shoulders) and it might not register for people of average size. In fact, at 6′ 4″, I’m an inch too big for the XP4, at least according to the brand, which says the bike fits ‘4’ 3″ 4″ riders. But that extra inch feels insignificant, because, through my first 150 miles on the bike, my legs still didn’t feel hemmed in by my saddle height.
Speaking of that saddle, the bike has an integrated suspension coil on the seat post, offering 40mm of travel. While, in theory, some rear suspension is welcome, I felt like, every time the coil compressed, it was actually sliding my seat tube into the frame. It was a strange sensation and I must admit that, after nearly 200 miles of riding, I wasn’t used to it.
Something else I don’t like about the XP4 is its old-school, one-sided kickstand. A bike of this heft should have a motor-scooter-style stand that retracts from the bottom bracket, providing even support on both sides of the machine. The one-sided kickstand, however, often finds myself (and I!) fighting gravity when I’m trying to lock the bike into something resembling a turn.
All told, these few flaws aren’t enough to make me dislike the XP4 750, as its smooth ride, extra-long range, handsome design and litany of aftermarket add-ons make it a bike I’ll be commuting with for a long, long time.
