A medieval tower located in the center of Rome partially collapsed on Monday, trapping one person and leaving another seriously injured.

Part of the Torre dei Conti – on the edge of the famous Roman Forum and near the Colosseum – gave way shortly after 11:30 local time (10:30 GMT).

While rescue operations were still ongoing, a second section of the 29-meter (90-foot) tall tower began to collapse again, creating a huge cloud of dust.

Firefighters were uninjured and managed to “put some protection” around the trapped man in time for the second collapse.
